Where did July go?
WOW, one month in northern Michigan and I am leaving tomorrow, but what a great month. Finished the day off with an energetic ride to Wilderness State Park and the annual Pries Landing dinner with our wonderull and gracious hosts, Jane and Lauren Jahn.

Got Milk

In Michigan, we grew up drinking milk, and I believe in the nutritional and health benefits of this nutrient dense beverage. It’s a great source of potassium, phosphorus, Vitamin A, and calcium, important for building peak bone mass and maintaining bone, plus it has been shown to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, hypertension, colon cancer, kidney stones, tooth decay, and may lessen the chances of dying from CHD or stroke. Plus chocolate (or white) milk is a terrific recovery drink following an intense bout of exercise. And there is no scientific evidence that dairy foods such as milk contribute to weight gain, if you are concerned about calories, go skim. So for all of you that are not lactose intolerant, forget the soda, energy drinks, and coffee and GET MILK.

Tri-ing is so much FUN!
Air temperature 60, water temperature 62, overcast and misting, but weather wasn't about to deter the Pries Landers relay team from the start of the annual Mackinaw City Triathlon...no way, we wouldn't miss it!

Does Sex Sell?

Oh yes, we know it does. I had more comments on my "Sex is healthy" blog then any of the 184 blogs I have written this year, but where and when it is used to sell what....well, there are limits. I'll let you decide for yourself what you think of these health club ads - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/24/lusty-lunging-let-us-know_n_244216.html

North Country Bike Club
What a great group to ride with today. Started in Boyne City and headed around Lake Charlevoix, which connects to Round Lake and empties into Lake Michigan. Ferried across one of the lake Charlevoix fingers and onto lunch in the town of Charlevoix at a side walk cafe. Enjoyed a wonderful bike path along Lake Michigan before climbing onto the rural roads and through forests that lead us back to Boyne City. A splendid 44 miles.
Relax and let the genes respond

Take a look at this compelling evidence that suggests the relaxation response, used in meditation and yoga, elicits changes in gene expression and how they respond to stress both short and long- term.
Specifically the study demonstrates that the relaxation response changed the expression of genes involved with inflammation, programmed cell death and the handling of free radicals, which are normal byproducts of metabolism that the body neutralizes in order to stop damage to cells and tissues. So relax and read on…

Perogis, Kabanosy, and Pigos...UUUMMMM GOOD!
Worked up an appetite riding from Cheboygan to Cross Village on Lake Michigan. Lunched at the infamous Legs Inn - best Polish food in northern Michigan, or maybe the entire state. Started off with a pale ale Polish beer, then onto Perogis (sauerkraut and sausage or potato and cheese in a light dumpling wrap and deep fried), kabanosy (Polish hunter's sausage - like mini kielbasa), pigos (hunter's stew - slow cooked pork, beef, and kielbasa, simmered with sauerkraut, cabbage, mushrooms, and tomatoes topped with kopaya dumplings, potato pancakes with escalloped apples, and all served with home baked rye bread.

An Antioxidant Powerhouse

Blueberries are packed with antioxidant phytonutients that neutralize free radical damage and have been shown to provide protective effects for heart disease, macular degeneration, age-related conditions of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, colon and ovarian cancer, urinary tract infections, and promote gastrointestinal health and night-time visual acuity. When analyzed with 60 fruits and vegetables, by researchers at Tufts University, blueberries won the gold medal for their capacity to destroy free radicals. These nutritional heavy weights are also full of flavor and low in calories.
There is nothing better then fresh northern Michigan blueberries, so we have been baking up blueberry buckle, blueberry pancakes, and eating them by the handful for snacks. HHMMMM good! You can learn more about the health benefits of blueberries by reading this article: http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?dbid=8&tname=foodspice
Partly Sunny
That's northern Michigan speak for mostly cloudy! After 4 cold, wet, blustery days, the sun did peak out and I was delighted to be off on my bike, with arm warmers, for a 40-miler to Long Lake and back through the hamlet of Alverno. Cheboygan is a great hub for riding northern Michigan. I can take off from the lake house for a variety of 40-60 mile scenic rides on rural roads, past small inland lakes, rivers, forests, fields, and of course the big lakes. Today I sighted an eagle and 2 healthy white-tail deer, plus an assortment of other northwoods sights. Don't think I'll be eating fresh corn before I leave this year, as it has been so cold the corn looks miniature.

Exercise IS Medicine
Yes, I'm talking to you.
The current buzzwords in health care today are "evidence-based medicine" (is there proof that something works?) and "comparative effectiveness" (if there's more than one way to do something, what works best?). There is overwhelming data to support that exercise is evidence-based and often times as effective as more invasive, clinically complex, and expensive measures of treatment (Physical Activity and Health, A Report of the Surgeon General, http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/sgr/sgr.htm).
How can something so clearly defined, consistently documented, simple to understand, cost-effective to presecibe and participate in, be so difficult to enact and implement in the general population? We are failing in our attempts to create a more physically active and healthy society. It’s time to get on board, to spread the word, preach the gospel, walk the talk, inspire the world, however, you choose to do it – to get others off the couch and out the door to a more physically active lifestyle. For some helpful insight and useful information check out the American College of Sports Medicine, Exercise is Medicine campaign http://www.exerciseismedicine.org.

Obesity biggest contributor to skyrocketing health care costs
If you are of normal weight you are in the minority! Two thirds of adults in the US are overweight or obese, and our health care costs have grown in proportion to our waistlines, hips and thighs. So,when some one says to me "Gosh, you look great", my response is "Thank you, I work at it, and you can look like this too." Then I ask "What can you do to build more physical activity into your daily lifestyle?" It's about making progressive small changes, identifying and participating in the activities you enjoy, making these activities a priority, and taking responsibility for getting out there and doing it.

And It Was!
What a ride today. Headed south to Gaylord, passing through the villages of Mullet Lake, Top-in-a-Bee, Indian River, Wolverine, and Vanderbuilt. Caught the North Central State Trail for about 20 miles that cruised through forests, fields of wild flowers, and along the Sturgeon River. Lunch dock side at Indian River and ice cream treat at Whippy Dip. A great 55 mile day! Doesn't get much better then this.

110 in Gila Bend
And in Tucson. OK, I am not complaining about the 60 degree temps here in northern Michigan, or that I am still wearing fleece and drinking hot tea to keep warm, or that the lake is tooooo cold to swim in. I just put on that wet suit this morning and said "I'm going swimming", started my mantra, "It's 110 in Tucson, it's 110 in Tucson, and took the plunge, swam for 8 mins. and I was out of there and into a hot shower.
